Light shines through the watercolours from a source beyond, illuminating form and movement, emotion and strength. The colours are pure and bold, the lines clean and simple. The free flow of pigment on heavy, absorbent paper establishes a comfortable harmony where colour space and light space collaborate in creating the image.
The oils arise from a different plane and reach a different place. The surfaces are richly textured and coloured, intricate and organic, the paintings often many layered, some revealing at the surface while others build upon the foundation below. The finished work is a labyrinthine construction yielding a complicated and interconnected whole, a simulacrum of the world around us.
These different and unique approaches to the contrasting nature of water and oil, serve to create images in which artist and media collaborate, employing techniques that have been honed over a long artistic career.
